DIY Design: Choosing the Right Accent Chair for Your Space

Accent chairs are important for their functionality and added visual appeal. Accent chairs achieve this through varying upholstery textures and furniture styles. Adding an accent chair to a room can be the finishing touch turning a pretty room to an extraordinary room. Adding or changing this one piece of furniture, can make all the difference to the appeal of a room. An accent chair is meant to accentuate a room, which means just that, make the room better. This piece can have a bold color or pattern, or have an interesting texture like velvet or leather. The size of the piece is important too. Adding a high-backed chair or a round chair to a room can create an instant focal point.

How to Choose Your Chair

The key factors in deciding your piece should be purpose, size, color, and number of chairs.

What is the purpose of the chair? Are you just adding it to fill an empty space? Is it a piece that you will want to use regularly? Some pieces are chosen just for looks, just to add interest to a room. Some accent chairs are added just to cozy up to the fire place. Other times accent chairs are added for everyday use. If you plan to use this regularly, choosing a material that will hold up is important. Leather is a great choice because it is strong, durable, and easy to clean. If this is a piece for comfort you need to decide if you want it to rock, glide, or recline. This is important to figure out because it will help determine exactly what you need or want.

Size Matters

In deciding the size of the chair, you need to determine how much space you have or want to use. If you have a large space, you may need to choose a large piece with larger details to fill the void in the room. If you have a small space, you may need to choose a smaller piece with simple lines.

How Many Chairs Does Your Space Need?

The number of chairs you choose should be chosen by the factors listed above. Do you have a large space? Maybe you need two. A small space? One should do. If you are adding chairs near a fireplace two chairs are typically the standard. If you have a couch centered in the room you may want one on each side facing towards the couch, so that the people enjoying the room can have an easy conversation.  If you have an empty space in a room you can add two chairs facing towards each other to make their own conversation area.  In the corner of a room you can add one accent chair with a small side table and it becomes the perfect place to cozy up and read a book.

Colors and Textures

Choosing the color and texture is the fun part. You can make the chair the focal point of a room by adding a bright bold color. Imagine walking into a room with white as its main color and seeing a large red chair. You are instantly going to be drawn to the red accent chair. Imagine the same scene with a textured chair. Sometimes rooms don’t need a pop of color, they need something to balance the color or tone it down. If you have a room this is a deep dark color or is decorated with bold bright colors, you could add a white accent chair to balance the room out. This is the phase in your purchase planning to get creative. This piece will allow you to have fun and choose something that you like that doesn’t necessarily have to match the rest of your decor. As mentioned earlier, this piece is meant to take the room to the next level.

Accent chairs are an important furniture piece to have in any room. Whether it’s a bedroom or living room, it adds so much to the appeal of a room. Not only can it add pizzazz to a room, but it can add much needed functionality. Sometimes you need extra seating or a piece that rocks or reclines.  Sometimes adding one piece of furniture can take a room that is dull and boring and really spice it up.
