Choosing the Right Dining Room Furniture

Choosing the right dining room furniture for your style and space should be a fun, non-stressful process if you go into it by being prepared.

Like any room you are adding new furniture to, the first and most important thing you can do is measure your space. You want to go into the store with the knowledge of what will work and what won’t work so you aren’t heart broken when the set you fall in love with is never going to fit in your space.

Next, know what style you want. Do you want a full set that matches or do you want a few pieces that you will mix and match to create your own style.

Make your dining table the focus of your shopping trip. First take a good look at your dining room’s style and function. Do you do more than eat at your dining room table? Is it where the family gathers to do projects, crafts, and homework? Do you often sit down and work at the dining room table? If you answered yes to any of these you are going to want a table that is functional and more durable than a formal table.

Style and size are next on the list. Do you entertain often or have large family meals? If so you may want to consider a table with a leaf that extends the table to accommodate everyone, but can be taken to be made smaller for everyday use. Then decide whether you like square, round, oval, or rectangular for shape. That is usually just a personal preference and most tables can be made larger no matter what shape you choose.

Once you have your dining table picked out and you know how much room it will take up in your dining room, you can plan for other furniture. The most popular choices are a china closet to display your china or other breakable items safely behind glass, a buffet for easy storage, and a hutch which is pretty much a combination of the two. When deciding what other furniture to buy, keep in mind what you will use it for. If you need a lot of storage and want some display, but don’t necessarily need it secured behind glass, then a hutch is a perfect piece for you.

Follow these few tips and you are sure to choose the right dining room furniture for your style and space.
